## What this index is

Open Source Agents is a curated shortlist of 12 open-source AI agents, ranked by GitHub star count. It covers five use cases: assistants, coding, browser automation, research, and automation. The shortlist is editorial and intentionally small — it is not a complete catalog of open-source agents, and a high rank means many GitHub stars, not proven capability.

## Methodology

- Selection: agents are chosen and maintained by the curator; entries are added or removed deliberately, never by an automated scrape.
- Ranking: descending GitHub stargazer count per repository, verified on the snapshot date above. Ties break on the previous rank.
- Freshness: the live directory re-fetches counts every 30 minutes with a REST → search API → cached count → dated snapshot fallback chain.
- Movement: rank changes are relative to the baseline date above, not to the last visit.
- Categories: each agent has one primary category and one specialty label. Both are browsing aids; most agents can do more than their label suggests.
- Licensing: most listed agents are open source; AutoGPT is a mixed-license repository (the classic agent is MIT, the platform is under a separate license). Always verify license terms in the repository.
